<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Do you have that one room in your house that is never quite comfortable?? In our house, it was our master bedroom--always too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. I hated paying to heat or cool my entire home just so we could sleep. The solution: A Ductless Mini Split (you can see it in the upper right) It has been the best!!! It is so quiet and quickly gets to the temperature we want. Our utility bills have gone down and best of all....we can sleep!!!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

Most people have heard of ductless cooling and heating systems, and they have probably seen the small, indoor devices installed high on walls in homes, restaurants or office buildings. But what do you really know about these systems?

1. They Offer Highly Flexible Solutions

Whereas traditional heat pumps and central air conditioning systems force cooled and heated air through ducts, ductless systems deliver air directly into different zones. They are comprised of a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that require nothing more than mounting capabilities and access to electricity.

Sometimes referred to as split systems, multi-split systems, or split-ductless systems, ductless cooling and heating offers home and business owners a cost-effective way to replace inefficient window units, space heaters and electric baseboard heaters. They can be installed in home additions, new construction, condominiums and apartments, or to improve temperature control in specific rooms. Ductless systems can even be fit for buildings that currently use ducted forced-air systems.

2. They Save You Money

One of the biggest reasons why homeowners switch to ductless cooling and heating is overall cost savings. In recent years, utility costs across the country have skyrocketed. When a home’s temperature depends upon an inefficient system, monthly bills can quickly climb out of control. Ductless systems operate on less power – they are smaller than traditional forced-air systems, and because the temperature-controlled air is delivered directly into a room, there is no loss in efficiency. Multi-split systems also allow homeowners to create “zones” in their home, which means they no longer have to cool or heat rooms that aren’t occupied.

In addition to saving money on utilities, homeowners may also be eligible for tax credits or utility rebates for the year they install a ductless system. There are many programs at the federal, state and local level that allow homeowners and businesses to take advantage of these additional savings.

3. They Improve Indoor Air Quality – Happy Breathing!

Often times, the quality of indoor air can actually be lower than the quality of outdoor air. With traditional HVAC systems, air ducts must be professionally cleaned on a regular basis, and even after cleaning, dust and allergens are left behind. Ductless systems, on the other hand, offer multi-stage filtration that can drastically reduce dust, bacteria, pollen, allergens and other particulates in the air.

4. They Are Quick and Easy to Install

Installing a traditional, ducted system can take several weeks and disrupts daily activities in the home. Ductless systems are far less invasive to install, and depending upon the number of indoor and outdoor units required, can be up and running in as little as one day.

Multi-split systems run on small pipes that require a mere three-inch hole. That means homeowners don’t have to worry about rebuilding walls or ceilings around ductwork and there is no loss of precious square footage.

5. Ductless Cooling Lowers Your Carbon Footprint

The small size of a ductless cooling system and its zoning capabilities allows for greater energy efficiency. Ductless cooling and heating systems follow ENERGY STAR guidelines, which means they are far more energy efficient than the minimum standards set forth by the U.S. federal government. Improved efficiency saves money, of course, but it also helps reduce your total carbon output.

Additionally, ductless systems take advantage of advances in chemistry to reduce effects on the environment. Ductless systems use a refrigerant called R410A, which is known for its zero ozone depletion potential. This means the system will have less impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle.

Ductless cooling and heating systems are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and completely customizable. They offer homeowners the ability to cool and heat specific zones of their home to the exact temperature they desire, providing consistent and exceptional year-round comfort.

It runs on its own, so why mess with something that seems to be working, right? However, there are many consequences that are guaranteed to arise if you neglect to keep your system well maintained.

Health Problems
In addition to some surprising problems that can affect your wallet, various health problems that are hard to detect can affect both you and your family. If you do not change your air filter regularly, it will become covered and clogged with dust and other particles. Overtime, these particles will be blown into your home where members of your household will undoubtedly breathe them in, often without even realizing it. This might seem harmless to the common individual, but eventually you will experience symptoms such as:

Fatigue

Coughing & Sore Throat

Congestion o Irritation in Eyes, Nose, and Throat

Asthma Attacks

Various Illnesses

Efficiency Problems
It is easy to assume that because your air conditioning turns on and off that it is working efficiently, but after a certain amount of time passes without maintenance, you may start to realize that your HVAC system seems to be having to work much harder just to reach the temperature you’ve set it at. This can be due to problems such as a clogged air vent or various unknown causes that need to be looked at by a professional HVAC service. This will also coincide with poorer air quality and could eventually render your wallet empty if your HVAC system reaches a point in which it must be replaced!

Keep your family (and wallet) safe all year around. Do not allow for bacteria-building dust particles to sweep through your home and cause your family to fall ill. Additionally, it is most beneficial to have your HVAC system checked by a professional as soon as you begin to notice that it is having to work much harder or is hardly working at all! The easiest step you should always ensure that you do is changing your air filter very consistently, as it is essentially the heart of your HVAC system; it relies on a clean filter to effectively pump in and circulate clean air into your home. To learn how to winterize your HVAC system, read our blog here.

Main Street Heating and Coolinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08492955995292737313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801956291037519570.post-2989263871174526682014-07-29T10:58:00.001-07:002014-07-29T10:58:15.034-07:00How Ventilation Affects Your Home AC

Ventilation, by definition, is the process by which “clean” air is intentionally brought into your home and circulates to push the stale air out. Having such a system in your home is incredibly important, as it keeps the air you breathe clean and rid of various toxins that you definitely don’t want inside your body. Luckily, there are various types of ventilation systems you can have installed in your home, each with their own benefits.

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation still removes stale air and replaces it with fresh, clean air in your home, only without using the typical mechanical systems. Natural ventilation as a sustainable energy source has become more popular due to the increase of modern and more contemporary buildings. Not to mention, it allows the home or building to use 60% less energy, dramatically increases air quality, and reduces carbon emissions.

How does it work? Taking full advance of wind and its buoyancy to drive fresh air into the home, it removes the need of fans. This ventilation method uses the “stack effect”, which makes use of the fact that warm air rises above cold air; this can be utilized so that naturally ventilated spaces can allow the warm air to escape from the vents located at the top of the building. This keeps cool air in and hot air out in a completely natural way

Why use this method? Simple, it is the more cost effective solution and for those who are concerned with being more “green”, it works naturally!

Mechanical Ventilation

Without ventilation to provide fresh air, pollution will most certainly build up in your home. This method of ventilation circulates the air in your home using ducts and fans and gives the user more control over the process rather than relying on natural air and wind. The benefits of mechanical ventilation are vast, especially considering that Americans typically spend most of their time indoors.

How does it work? There are a variety of mechanical ventilation systems, all based on the type of climate in which you live. What they all have in common is that they allow for fresh air to be drawn in by a vent and distributed to each room by a fan or duct. Depending on your climate, your HVAC professional will decide how much air should be brought it, dehumidified, and pushed back out.

Why use this method? You know the air quality you’re going to get, you are ensured a certain amount of comfort, and it’s all because you have more control with a mechanical ventilation system.

Surprisingly enough, indoor air can easily become more polluted then the outdoors because the dust and dirt gets trapped inside. Ventilation systems allow you the relaxation of knowing you are breathing clean, fresh air. Remember that proper installation is absolutely critical to maintaining proper air quality in your home, so trust the experts at Main Street Heating & Cooling!

Main Street Heating and Coolinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08492955995292737313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801956291037519570.post-31210478762627882702014-07-09T12:53:00.001-07:002014-07-09T12:53:14.634-07:00Untitled

EVOLUTION OF FURNACES FROM BEGINNING TO NOW http://bit.ly/1sT7Ufp #Furnace #History

Main Street Heating and Coolinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08492955995292737313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801956291037519570.post-72546202450241707692014-02-28T11:30:00.002-08:002014-02-28T11:30:59.482-08:00What Every Woman Should Know When Looking for a Furnace Installation/Repair

With
Arctic freezes and Polar vortexes around us, it is no surprise that people face
dreary winters with threat to not just travel and work, but also maintenance of
precious appliances. To avoid emergency and very expensive heating repairs when
temperatures dip, it is important to ensure that your furnaces and heating
systems are in the best working condition. If they are not, it will result in
an unhealthy atmosphere and extremely cruel living conditions. And the blame
and responsibility to ensure their proper maintenance falls on the woman of the
house. There are some things that the woman should remember to avoid last
minute repairs or being blind sighted by the cold.

Ladies,
if you move into an old home, old but sturdy, then you should keep in mind that
the appliances and utilities might not be in the best shape. So after repairing
the structure of the house, you must pay attention to the furnace. You might
not need a new furnace, but you might have to do some repair work on it.

Quality Control

If you
have to buy a new furnace, then you must check its quality. There are several
factors that play a key role in determining the quality level of the furnace;
BTU level, existence of an air filter and humidifier and the brand. Some
furnaces have an air filter fit into them. An air filter is especially helpful
if you or anyone in the house, especially young kids, are allergic to dust or
small particles in the air. A build-in humidifier is very important as it eases
the dryness in the air and static in electricity.

Before Buying

Before
you go out into the market and buy that essential furnace, make sure that you
conduct a thorough check in your own home to see the type of construction. This
will help determine the type of furnace you purchase. Check whether you have a
natural gas line, a propane tank or an oil tank and the source of electricity,
as well its intensity. Is your house in an area where there is a problem with
the electric connection?

AFUE

This is
not just another complex acronym without an explanation. AFUE or Annual Fuel
Utilization Efficiency is a federal government requirement, which rates
equipment for efficiency. The higher the rating, the better the model. Gas
furnaces are rated for AFUE based upon the amount of heat used to warm your
home from burned fuel. A 90% furnace will use 90% of the available heat to warm
you. 10% of the heat is vented outside. Older furnaces are often as low as 60%
efficient. So they need to be repaired to bring their efficiency up.

Types of Furnaces

There are
three types - a single-stage, 2-stage and variable-speed. The 2-stage and
variable speed furnaces give greater humidity control, quieter operation and better
air circulation and temperature distribution throughout the house. So if you
have an older version that needs constant repair, it would suit you better to
replace it with a more modern version.

Do It Yourself

Some DIY
tips include preventive maintenance of the furnace. Always check the filter and
do it periodically, especially before the winter season. This will ensure
optimal energy efficiency and air quality. Ensure that the thermostat is set to
'heat' and is a few degrees above the room temperature and check whether the
fan works. If it does not come on, then the unit might be frozen and needs to
be checked at the level of the main furnace.

buckling our seat belts whenever we get in the car to installing smoke

order to stay safe. However, we sometimes forget one very important safety
measure: protecting against carbon monoxide poisoning. The steps you can taketo make your home safer are simple, inexpensive, and effective at making sure

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Carbon monoxide is a colorless and
odorless gas that can cause death if inhaled. You can find carbon monoxide in
fumes from cars, lanterns, gas appliances, and heating systems and if you
encounter the gas in an area that lacks ventilation, you could be in serious
trouble. Because red blood cells absorb carbon monoxide at a faster rate than
oxygen, the oxygen in your body can quickly become replaced with carbon
monoxide. This can cause tissue damage and even death. Once exposed to carbon
monoxide, you may experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and chest
pain, among other symptoms. In fact, carbon monoxide poisoning is the number
one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States.

carbon monoxide poisoning is remembering to have your furnace and other
fuel-burning appliances in your home properly serviced. This means hiring a
professional technician to come out and inspect the appliances. The technician
will look over all the parts of the appliances to make sure they are in good
repair, check for any damage or problems associated with the age of the
appliance, clean the interior workings of the appliance, and run tests to make
sure that everything is in good working order. This kind of maintenance can
extend the life of your appliance, ensure that it is running efficiently, and
catch any problems before they turn into a serious issue like carbon monoxide
leakage.

Heating and cooling your house are essential things that aid
in the comfort of your life at home. Unfortunately, outdated and old heating
and cooling systems are often inefficient, and require hundreds of dollars in
operation and energy costs each year. To keep your home at the perfect
temperature, reduce your carbon footprint, save money, and even get a tax
credit, you should consider going green with a new HVAC system. Read on for all
the details about energy efficient HVAC systems, as well as how you can get a
tax credit for installing one in your home:

Benefits of Replacing
Your Old HVAC System

A new HVAC system has three components: heating,
ventilating, and air conditioning. In order to make each of these components
“green,” or energy efficient, you’ll need to purchase an entirely new HVAC
system. Purchasing a new and updated HVAC system can actually do more than just
save you money; a new HVAC system can help to filter out harmful pollutants and
chemicals like nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur oxides.

For installations needs, or to have your HVAC system
inspected or checked, consider hiring a heating
a cooling expert.

What to Look for in a
New HVAC System

After making the decision to purchase a new HVAC, there are
a couple of things that you should look for:

Make sure that the HVAC system you purchase has
an Energy Star seal, so you know it is energy efficient.

Purchase the HVAC system that’s most efficient.

Consider purchasing an HVAC system that has
additional energy efficient features, such as power-saving options or options
that allow you to program the HVAC to set temperatures or put your HVAC on a
temperature schedule.

Choose an HVAC system that, when turned off,
uses very little energy. Believe it or not, many HVAC systems are still energy
hogs even when not in use.

Not only will purchasing a new HVAC save you money
throughout the year on energy costs and help protect your family’s health,
you’ll also be able to qualify for a federal tax credit by going green. The
credit is applicable to energy efficient improvements in already existing homes
(you can get a tax credit for other improvements too, such as solar panels).
The maximum tax credit you can get for installing your new HVAC is $500. For
more information about other home renovation tax credits that you may qualify
for, visit the United
States Department of Energy.

In recent years, the amount of bad air has increased
immensely, making people sick all over the world. There are many
factors that contribute to poor air quality. Did you know that 52% of the bad air quality is due to car
emissions, while refineries only account for 32%? The majority our bad air comes from the
amount of driving we do. Refineries and factories then add pollution to the
air. There are several ways we can effectively minimize the amount of pollution that is in our air.

The biggest most effective means of minimizing pollution is to purchase products with clean air in mind. There are several products out there
that either don’t affect or have minimal impact on pollution levels.

The most effective way to keep poor air quality out of your home is to help increase the air quality outside of your home. There are numerous options that will help to reduce emissions and create better air quality outside of your home. The first and most effective is public transportation, luckily we live in a city where public transportation is an incredibly viable option. The Utah Transit Authority or UTA has several options that make it possible to travel the city without ever having the need for a car. Another option is ride-sharing or car pooling. If every driver in Salt Lake City were to carpool with at least 3 other individuals, that would immediately drop emissions by nearly 75%. A more expensive option would be buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

What should not be a shock to anyone is that poor air quality can lead to both long-term and short-term health problems. These health problems can take many shapes and sizes and can be extremely harmful if left untreated. Lung infection is one of the more serious conditions that can be caused by poor air quality. Nasal congestion, while not as serious, can still lead to more serious issues like sinus infections. Prolonged exposure to poor air quality can cause individuals to develop Asthma, while people who already suffer from Asthma are much more likely to have attacks when air quality is poor. Headaches can also be caused by poor air quality and can exacerbated by the smells and fumes associated with an inversion.

Even if the dirty air can't be immediately dealt with outdoors, there are steps you can take to improve the air quality inside of your home. If your home has an old or outdated furnace or air conditioning system, you may want to consider an upgrade. Newer HVAC systems do not simply move air through your home, they also help filter and clean the air to ensure that the air in your home is of the highest quality. If you have a newer HVAC system, be sure to check and replace your filters regularly. Poor air quality can be a hazard for people living in the Salt Lake Valley, improving outdoor air quality requires cooperation and consideration among all residents. However, there are options for you to improve the air quality inside of your home that do not require hundreds of thousands people to cooperate.

Always has been. It’s impossible not to be impressed with the snow-capped peaks scraping along the edge of the sky. Our snow, downy and dry, is the best I’ve ever ridden (all due respect to our neighbors’ claims). For me, in the midst of the mountains and the snow and the terrain and the trees there’s a mystery—there’s a perfect line that I know is out there, somewhere, and I never stop looking for it. There’s a perfect tree run, a secret bowl, a drop that puts me waist deep in powder. Finally, there’s a smile and a brightness I feel when it all starts to come together. Surfer’s call this feeling ‘the stoke.’ I don’t know what I call it but it’s my own version of the Endless Summer that keeps me coming back to the mountains. My perfect run is out there waiting for me to find it, to carve it, to claim it…

It seems like a pretty big leap to make a comparison to the elation I feel in the mountains and the pride I feel as a business owner. The two appear to be very different worlds. On the surface they are. But there’s always more to it than meets the eye. I look for perfection in both worlds. I look at the details of my job and at everything we do at Main Street Heating and Cooling with the same passion that drives me down the slopes. I scrutinize the planning, our people, materials, equipment, and the installation of our products with the same passion that I use to evaluate a snow report, my ski gear, and the terrain. It’s always the details that make the difference. For me, the passion for perfection carries over perfectly.

I’m sharing this with you because there is a difference between imagining perfection and relentlessly going after it every single day. Main Street Heating and Cooling is more than just another service company. We never set out to fall in to the middle of the bell curve. Our commitment to the perfect installation, the perfect service maintenance, and the perfect customer experience is rooted in the same passion that sends me to the mountains year after year. It never ends. I know that our sales, service, and installation teams share the same ‘stoke’ for getting it right and doing it better than anyone else. There’s nothing accidental about this. It’s the characteristic that we all have in common.

Winter will pass and I’ll move on to mountain biking and trail running. I know our customers, however, will be living in their homes regardless of the weather. I know that they’ll be living better lives, saving money, feeling comfortable. Our dedication to the perfect installation ensures that how they live is a reflection of how we do our job. Nothing less than perfection will suffice.

See you up on the hill,

It seems like the holiday shopping “season” comes earlier
and earlier each year. From Black Friday
to Cyber Monday the expectations to start buying gifts as soon as possible has
become the norm. But this year the
team at Main Street Heating and Cooling is focusing on the things that you
can’t put a price tag on: Our traditions.

Every family has their own traditions—the small rituals that
keep us grounded and remind us that the holiday season is about being thankful
for the wonderful blessings in our lives.
These traditions, many of which have been with us since we were kids,
are the thoughtful reminders that people rather than presents are the better meaning
of the holidays.

My family traditions started with storytelling. Every season our dad would read the story of
the birth of Christ out of Luke hand written on a wood and leather scroll that my
oldest brother made (he always was a little bit of an overachiever and we love
him for it!). Our stockings always had
peanuts and oranges in them. No idea how
that started but over time it didn’t matter—it was part of how we “did” the
holidays together. As an adult and a
father I look back on those times differently than I did as a child. The simplicity of something as seemingly easy
as an orange or a handful of peanuts is a symbol of caring, of giving, of
love. These are the things that Brent
and I are carrying over to our own families these days.

As a father I want my children to also understand the
importance of simple giving. My wife
always makes sure that we support a family in need during the holidays. We know that we are incredibly fortunate in
our lives and feel it’s equally important that our children appreciate not only
their blessings but the significance of helping those who are less
fortunate. We also make sure to open our
home to friends who’s family and loved ones live far away. For us, the spirit of giving extends beyond
the gifts under the tree (which, by the way, we open Christmas eve). I can’t say enough about the importance that
helping others plays in our lives.

Of course, the holiday season can’t be complete without a
visit to our parents. Over the years
I’ve been perfecting a chocolate cheesecake recipe that’s become my “go to”
contribution to our holiday dinner.
Somehow, mysteriously, there’s always a piece of cheesecake missing by
the time we’re ready to head over to the in-laws. My kids deny knowing who the culprit is…and
then smile. It cracks us all up.

Over the years, I’ve strived to teach my children that the
holiday season is about so much more than receiving gifts. It’s about giving gifts. And the gifts that I want them to remember,
the traditions that I want them to understand, are that we—all of us—can give
of ourselves in better and richer ways all year long. The season of giving is something that should
never be confined by a few weeks on a calendar.
It’s something that should be part of who we are and what we do all year
long. Traditions are reminders of these
things. Small gestures that put a smile
on our face or make us laugh can be magnified many time over. All it takes is an open heart, a warm smile, and
little acts of kindness.

First, we want to say “thank you” to the friends and clients who continually support our work as Utah’s heating, air conditioning, and service leader. We’re deeply grateful. Also, we want to thank the many people who have supported Main Street Movember and have generously donated to our food bank outreach. We also want to send out best thoughts and wishes to #SFBatkid, Miles Scott.

Like millions of people across the country we were touched by Miles, the San Francisco “Bat Kid” and his amazing adventures. Thanks to the Make-a-Wish foundation we watched a city, then a nation, make Miles’ dream of saving Gotham come true. It was a touching, human reminder that we all play small roles in helping each other live better lives. Go get ‘em Miles!
As you can see by the picture, Movember has turned in to Beardvember here at Main Street. It’s not exactly by the Movember rules, but Brent’s wife sort of put her foot down on his handlebar moustache. Plus, we didn’t think that Brent could actually grow a full beard. Turns out we were wrong about the beard but very right about the importance of supporting the Movember Movement. Men from around the world are proudly sharing their “Mo’s” in order to bring funding and awareness to men’s health issues. Main Street Heating and Cooling is equally proud to be involved and support this outstanding moustache movement. Can’t say that Brent’s wife is totally on board yet but there’s always 2014!

Finally, Main Street Heating and Cooling is contributing to a local food bank. Helping people feel comfortable in their homes is what we do as a business. But what if the people living in the homes are going hungry? According to a 2012 study, 15.8% or nearly one in six Utah households suffer from food hardships. The number of Utah families requiring food assistance has increased 269%. Food hardships have a ripple effect ranging from health problems to lost time at work to poor academic performance. This year Main Street Heating and Cooling is supporting the South Valley Food Bank. Please give us a call or send us an email if you’d like to learn how to help us ensure that no family goes hungry this holiday season.

So as we head towards Thanksgiving, everyone here at Main Street Heating and Cooling wishes you, your family, and your loved ones a fantastic Thanksgiving!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801956291037519570.post-85070915639704954002013-11-06T07:03:00.001-08:002013-11-06T07:03:38.558-08:00Move Over for Movember!!Look out everyone! This November Doug and Brent are growing moustaches in Movember. Movember is a global movement dedicated to raising awareness and funds for some of the most common health problems men face today. Plus, moustaches are, well, manly (and Brent needs a little more “manly”). Never heard of Movember? Then here’s why Main Street Heating and Cooling is a very proud supporter:

The Movember Movement began in 2003 as a fun way to raise awareness about the very real and preventable threats that prostate and testicular cancer pose for men. The idea was simple: grow a moustache as an easy way to make a statement, tell a few friends, and use business to support a great cause. In 2003 30 “Mo Bros” styled that hair above the lip and launched Movember. Now, 10 years later, Movember has become a truly global phenomenon. In 2012 Movember raised over 147 million dollars in donations—all of which are given directly to organizations committed to men’s health. 1,270,152 men registered as “Mo Bros” and grew some of the most well groomed facial hair on the planet. Finally, Movember was ranked in the Top 100 NGOs based on its positive impact on health awareness, innovation, and sustainability. What began as a clever way to say “we care” has become a powerhouse.

Our team at Main Street Heating and Cooling was drawn to the Movember Movement because our business shares many of the same values as the Movember Movement itself:

Fun. We love our work and we love our customers. We believe that we can successfully combine a fantastic heating and cooling business with a totally positive experience for our customers. Replacing or servicing a heating or cooling system doesn’t have to be a drag.

Accountability. Main Street and Heating and Cooling is built on a loyal following. We’re accountable to our customers for great feedback and continued support.

Caring. Ever had one of our cookie bags? Give us a call. Trust us on this one. Our business grows because our customers know we care.

Humble. We’re a new company with an old soul. Traditional values keep us grounded and they have since day one.

Innovative. Main Street Heating and Cooling recommends products that are intelligently designed for the modern lifestyle.

Remarkable Experience. The most important part of our job is making sure our customers feel that they’ve been treated to a superior service experience.

Change Agents. We didn’t set out to build a run-of-the-mill heating, cooling, and service company. We set out to set a new standard in the HVAC industry. We’re feeling pretty good about our start.

Main Street Heating and Cooling is more than simply an HVAC company. We know that business can be a force of positive change and assistance for others. If growing a moustache is a simple way to say “We care” then we’re all in. Welcome to Movember!

Having a heating or cooling system put in is an important investment in your health and comfort. That’s why it’s so very vital that
such systems are put in place properly and efficiently.

What’s the importance
of proper installation?

The majority of added energy bill costs come from poor or sub-par performance of your HVAC system. While tweaks and repairs to the system
may be necessary over time, a bad installation will have you doomed from the
start.

Energy-efficient systems are only cost effective if they
operate as intended. A poor installation may cause such a system to operate in
an even more expensive manner.

Likewise, an improper installation can be a hidden danger to
your health and well-being. Misaligned duct-work can come apart unexpectedly,
exposed wire can pose a potential fire hazard, and chemical residue can be
abrasive and toxic to children or pets.

As homeowners start battening down the hatches for the colder months, you can get a head start by making sure these five areas are prepped and ready.

Air Filter Upgrade.

While it should be changed every month, your home’s air filter should be changed and ready for when you begin using your heating system. A clogged air filter will cause your HVAC system to use more energy, resulting in an unnecessary increase in your heating bill. If you want to be proactive, you can even buy in bulk and avoid later trekking through the elements.

Closed Door Policy.

Also of vital importance is accounting for every entryway and open source for the outdoors to make its way inside. Windows, doorways, roof access and basement entries, areas where walls meet: all need to be properly adjusted and sealed to ensure that no wasted circulation occurs.

An open path through the attic can let as much heat escape as a wide-open window, so be certain that your home’s fortification is thorough.

Out with the Cold, In with the Humidity.

Restarting a heating system after enjoying the summer months can quickly create a dry environment indoors. A humidifier can alleviate the pangs of this transition, thwart static buildup in your home, and even provide some additional health benefits for your air and complexion. It’s important to ensure that your humidifier unit is properly cleaned and ready to reinitiate, so take the proper steps to make sure it’s in working order.

If you’ve never thought about having a humidifier, there are a number of options available to you—from single room units to house-wide humidifying units that provide the most long-term benefit.

All Clear Outdoors.

An often-overlooked obstacle that can hinder savings is built up debris or foliage on or around your outdoor HVAC unit. Take the proper steps to clear the brush and buildup appropriately.

This is something best done while the weather is still temperate and the last thing you’ll want to worry about in the thick of winter. Make certain that the unit remains unobstructed and prevent any potential threats by trimming any nearby foliage.

Expert Opinion.

Before the increased demand hits, it’s in your best interest to have a trained HVAC specialist inspect your entire system to make sure it’s in fully operational. He or she will be able to provide you with the best practical advice for enjoying controlled-climate comfort during the winter while simultaneously saving wherever possible. Your specialist will also be able to perform a number of these checks if need be.

Unforeseen emergencies do happen, but having these preparations in place will help to minimize or even eliminate the threat of them occurring. For those unforeseeable worst-case scenarios, just know that emergency HVAC services do exist. Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801956291037519570.post-57210325745950002872013-08-19T06:51:00.001-07:002013-08-19T06:51:16.875-07:00Preparing Your Home for FallAs summer fades and fall looms, it’s the perfect time for Salt Lake City residents to prepare their property for the season’s unpredictable weather conditions. The following checklist is a handy reference that will have you ready for autumn in no time.

Take care of the gutters. As your gutters collect piles of summer debris, it’s easy for clogs to form. Remove twigs, leaves and other materials from your gutters and flush them with a hose. Remember basic ladder safety and never do this unless someone else is home!

Winterize outdoor faucets. When it’s time to shut off the sprinklers, it’s a good idea to remove hoses from their spigots and drain outdoor pipes so you don’t face the cost and inconvenience of water damage.

Clean up the fireplace. Clear old logs and debris from the hearth, and hire a professional to remove last year’s ashes and soot from inside your chimney. Keeping your chimney maintained prevents dangerous particulates from entering your home—and reduces the risk of structural fires.

Keep the cold weather outside. Weather stripping windows and doors keeps you cozy while lowering utility bills. Look for light and feel for air around openings and outlets. To insulate your home from drafts, choose from a variety of foam, vinyl or felt weather stripping (depending upon the application). Aging homes may also require window replacement to improve comfort and lower energy use. This can be a costly investment, so consider replacing a few at a time, starting with main living areas.

Prioritize family safety. Each year, it is a good idea to have a family meeting to go over safety measures, fire escape routes, and disaster preparation. This is also an ideal time to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Visit the FEMA website or Be Ready Utah for comprehensive information about being prepared for weather, natural disasters, and other unexpected circumstances.

Maintain your heating system. We have compiled a list of do-it-yourself tasks that will keep your HVAC system running safely and comfortably, year round. In addition, it’s a good idea to schedule a professional inspection one to two times per year. HVAC inspections are not a gimmick. Studies show that well-maintained furnaces and heat pumps last longer and run more efficiently than overlooked systems. Your HVAC technician will inspect and clean your equipment, change filters, and alert you to potential safety hazards. Reputable HVAC companies often provide coupons and promotions for system winterization, so this is an affordable investment you can’t afford to neglect.

To schedule a seasonal inspection for your home comfort system, or to inquire about fall specials and HVAC winterization services, call 801.930.5151 or email our team of skilled technicians today!

The ENERGY STAR program is mandated by the federal government, and gives consumers a quick and easy way to identify appliances that help them save both money and energy. To earn the ENERGY STAR logo, a product must offer all the performance features expected by consumers, along with enhanced energy efficiency. Certified appliances must be at least 10 percent more efficient than dictated by government requirements, and they must use non-proprietary technologies available through multiple manufacturers to ensure consumers have choice.

While qualified products typically cost slightly more than their conventional counterparts, consumers must be able to recoup the difference in price through energy savings. The extra up-front investment in ENERGY STAR-rated home heating and cooling equipment is worth it, since you stand to save significantly over the life of your new equipment in the form of sustained savings on your utility bills. It’s always a wise idea to invest a little extra in a product which will dramatically reduce your household energy consumption.
The NATE program is an industry initiative designed to give consumers a reliable way to find HVAC contractors with elite training and skills. It is an optional designation that goes above and beyond regular technician licensing requirements, providing training and testing programs that raise the bar of excellence to an even higher level.

The NATE program was established in 1997, and it has grown to become the largest independent credentialing organization in the American HVAC industry. HVAC professionals can only earn NATE certification by completing rigorous, demanding examinations which test their knowledge of both core and advanced-level concepts in system design, maintenance, and repair. To maintain their certification, technicians must also complete 60 hours of continuing education in their chosen specialization and be reexamined every five years.

When you choose a NATE-certified contractor, you’ll benefit in several important ways. First, and most importantly, you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing the job will be done right the first time. You will also enjoy improved performance from your home heating and cooling equipment, because NATE-certified contractors use cutting-edge techniques to ensure your system runs at peak efficiency. This is a two-part advantage: first, it extends the life of your HVAC equipment, helping you avoid costly repairs and delaying the need for system replacement. Second, it helps keep your home heating and cooling costs in check, as equipment optimized for efficiency uses less energy, and that translates into savings on burgeoning energy bills.

Additional NATE certification benefits include:

Improved safety. NATE-certified technicians apply their expertise to safely eliminate dangerous combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide from your home. They also ensure all necessary electrical connections are safe and secure.

Better indoor air quality. By leveraging their comprehensive knowledge of air balance, air infiltration and ductwork, NATE-certified professionals help keep your indoor air clean and healthy.

Boosted system performance. NATE-certified system installations provide even levels of heating and cooling throughout your home, and help your HVAC equipment perform at peak manufacturer specifications.

We at Main Street Heating & Cooling are proud participants in the NATE program, and we’re proud to offer our elite expertise to valued customers throughout the Salt Lake City area. Everyone’s heard horror stories of contractors who did shoddy work, charged exorbitant prices, or employed rude or unskilled technicians. The problem is that every contractor claims to be consumer-friendly, fair, and reputable. How are you to separate the good apples from the bad?

The answer: know what to do and what not to do when hiring an HVAC contractor.

The Dos of Hiring an HVAC Contractor

These approaches should be at the top of your “do” list:

Ask questions. Find out how long the company has been in business, ask for their licensing and insurance information, and check to see if there are any complaints on file at your local Better Business Bureau office. One or two complaints aren’t much to worry about, but more than that—and you’re probably better off giving your business to someone else.

Gather referrals. Ask the contractor for multiple referrals from satisfied past customers. Follow up. Contact the referrals. Ask if they were pleased with the contractor’s work, and whether the company finished on time for the price they quoted.

The Don’ts of Hiring and HVAC Contractor

Next, make sure you “don’t” do these things:

Make an upfront payment. Contractors that require upfront payments tend to be more interested in your money than they are in doing a good job. It’s also difficult to get your money back if you’re not satisfied with the work.

Choose a company that uses subcontractors. This is a red flag, as the contractor can later claim they are not responsible for the subcontractor’s work if you’re not happy—and you’ll have little recourse available.

Hire someone who won’t give references. There is no legitimate reason that a reputable HVAC contractor would not be able to give you a referral to a satisfied past customer. If the contractor hems and haws, or refuses to give references, don’t hire them.

At Main Street Heating & Cooling, we provide timely service, friendly and knowledgeable staff, budget-friendly solutions, and the very best products. Many furnace and air conditioner manufacturers require products to be professionally installed in order to honor their warranties. However, there are usually other stipulations in the fine print that many people are not aware of: warranty protections can also be invalidated if you fail to properly service and maintain your equipment.

Experts recommend getting your furnace and air conditioner tuned up in both the fall and spring. This ensures that equipment is in optimal operational condition prior to the full onset of heating and cooling seasons. During these tune-ups, licensed technicians clean, test and calibrate all the equipment’s working parts, and conduct tests to ensure your thermostat is working correctly.

The benefits of annual maintenance include:

Superior efficiency. Regularly serviced HVAC equipment operates at peak efficiency, which translates into improved indoor comfort as well as reduced home heating and cooling costs. Your system won’t have to work as hard to achieve the desired level of heating or cooling, and that means lower household energy consumption rates.

Fewer breakdowns. Not only will you protect your warranties by getting your furnace and air conditioner serviced regularly, but you will also prevent the need to make future service calls. Technicians can spot and correct growing problems before they necessitate a major repair—which saves you money in the long run.

Extended equipment life. Having your equipment serviced year in and year out will help to extend its life and delay the need to invest in costly replacements. Well-maintained equipment regularly exceeds manufacturer specifications for life expectancy.

Boosted safety. During the maintenance visit, the technician will also ensure your furnace is not generating excess amounts of carbon monoxide, and that harmful byproducts are safely being routed outdoors.

At Main Street Heating & Cooling, we are pleased to offer affordable annual Advantage Plans to our valued customers. These plans allow you to automatically schedule your seasonal system tune-ups at discounted rates, and provider priority scheduling to our preferred members so equipment is serviced in a timely manner. Today’s energy efficient homes are built tightly to conserve heating and cooling energy. While this has a positive impact upon utilities—and more directly, your wallet—it may not allow your home to properly “breathe.” Over time, decreased ventilation can become a major health concern: exacerbating problems like allergies, asthma and respiratory conditions.

DIY Tips for Clean Indoor Air

According to the EPA, indoor air can be up to seven times more polluted than outdoor air! Since a significant portion of our time is spent breathing the air in our homes, indoor air quality is very important. In addition to hiring a qualified IAQ contractor to professionally assess your home’s IAQ, there are many do-it-yourself ways to improve the air you breathe. They include:

Vacuum and dust regularly. While it sounds too basic, this step is important for removing dust, pet dander and other particulates from your home. Remember to change your vacuum bag and filter regularly, too—or dirt may end up back in the air.

Take your shoes off when you come indoors. This is a simple, no-cost way to reduce the dirt and debris that is otherwise tracked into your house.

Making smart home improvement decisions. When remodeling or redecorating, use natural products that don't emit dangerous chemicals. Choose low- or no-VOC paints, non-toxic caulking and finishes, and natural fiber carpet and furniture.

NEVER smoke indoors.

Place dust covers on mattresses and pillows to reduce dust mite population. Many people are allergic to dust mites, and dust mite protection is an economical way of providing allergy relief.

Use high-quality HEPA air filters for your HVAC system. Depending upon the type, these high-efficiency particulate air filters capture particulates and gaseous particles and remove them from the air.

Regularly maintain your HVAC system. In addition to improving the longevity of your equipment, regular cleaning and inspections prevent excess dirt and other particles from entering your indoor air supply.

Partnering with industry-leading brands, Main Street technicians assess your indoor air and recommend IAQ products that are both affordable and efficient.

Main Street IAQ installation services include:

Electronic air cleaners, which generate a magnetic charge to remove contaminant particles.

Air purifiers, which remove contaminants from the air and reduce the effect of second-hand smoke.

Ultraviolet lamps, which kill bacteria and mold that grows inside air conditioning equipment and along coils.

Whole-house humidifiers, which optimize and stabilize moisture levels and contribute to respiratory health.

To learn more about the importance of IAQ in your home, or to schedule your complimentary consultation with our Salt Lake City IAQ experts, call 801-930-5151 today—or email the Main Street team today!
Instead of tolerating an indoor chill to save money, consider installing a whole-house humidifier. Moist air retains heat better than dry air, making you more comfortable without turning up the furnace. Plus, a humidifier requires significantly less energy than a furnace or heat pump—so you’ll enjoy twofold energy savings.

Here’s how it works.

A whole-house humidifier connects to your home’s heating and cooling system, and utilizes the system’s ductwork to circulate moist air throughout your home. High-quality humidifiers monitor humidity levels and are programmed to control moisture output. This is important, because excessive moisture may lead to mold and mildew growth.

The Proven Benefits

Aside from energy savings, humidifiers offer a number of other benefits for homeowners living in Utah’s dry, unforgiving climate. These include:

Hydrated skin & hair. Forced air heating can lower humidity to 10 percent, leading to eczema, dry scalp, psoriasis, dry eyes and other bothersome conditions. To remain healthy, skin and hair require humidity levels of 30 to 40 percent. A whole house humidifier can be used year-round to establish these levels.

Relief from asthma and allergies. Excessive drying of nasal membranes aggravates asthma, sinusitis and upper respiratory infections while making it more difficult to recover from colds. Appropriate moisture levels improve health and prevent drying of sinus passages.

Preservation of wood furniture. Wood becomes parched in dry climates—and may crack or buckle. A Utah whole-house humidifier maintains optimal relative humidity, reducing cracking and other wood damage. (It’s important to note that too much humidity is not good for furniture, either. Your Main Street HVAC specialist can help you establish appropriate humidity levels.)

Reduced static. In addition to the annoyance of unwanted static electricity, too much static may damage electronic equipment. Proper humidification helps to mitigate this condition, which is common in the Salt Lake Valley.

Whole-house humidifiers are surprisingly affordable, and cost depends upon the size of your home and type of HVAC system. However, if a whole-house humidifier isn’t in the budget this year, you can still benefit from purchasing high-quality room humidifiers for bedrooms and living areas. Target, Walmart, big-box stores and other retailers carry these room-sized units, and many stores offer seasonal sales and coupons toward the purchase. Visit ConsumerReports.org for a humidifier buying guide.

To request an estimate for whole-house humidification, or to speak with a Main Street team member about the benefits of Utah humidifiers (including potential energy savings!), call 801-930-5151 or email info@mainstreetcomfort.com today. If you’ve been nursing your ailing furnace along, this season is a great time to purchase a new model. Due to the 2013 Furnace Efficiency Law, many manufacturers are offering equipment deals and system incentives that will save you money before the law goes into effect.

What is the 2013 Furnace Efficiency Law?

Passed by the Department of Energy (DOE), the new Furnace Efficiency Law will be instituted May of 2013, and elevates energy standards for HVAC appliances. Under this new law, Salt Lake City residents are required to have non-weatherized furnaces or mobile gas furnaces that are at least 90% efficient. (Previously, the standard was 80% efficiency).

Benefits of Replacing Your Furnace Before May 2013

Residents who install a new furnace before the new DOE law goes into effect are still permitted to purchase 80% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) furnaces. When properly installed by a Utah HVAC professional, these 80% AFUE furnaces can last 20 years or more with regular maintenance. In addition, the units cost less than their 90% AFUE successors, making them a good investment for vacation home and rental property owners (or homeowners on a tight budget). And, when you choose an 80% AFUE furnace model, installation costs are less than they are with 90% models—which require additional venting and may also require replacement of your chimney lining and hot water heater.

Benefits of Higher Efficiency Furnaces

If you’re considering upgrading your home’s heating system to 90% AFUE or above (called “condensing furnaces"), you’ll enjoy a number of advantages, as well. These include:

Reduced carbon footprint

Lower monthly utility bills

Extra heat exchanger that utilizes heat from exhaust gases, thereby saving energy

Rebates and incentives from manufacturers, utility companies and the government

At Main Street Heating & Cooling, our qualified technicians will help you select the furnace that suits your comfort and budget needs. Our team members are familiar with 2013 DOE legislation, and can assist you with purchasing and installing a central heating system that will perform to your expectations and save you money for years to come.
